Many of our guests have been visiting the project which has in the meantime also been covered several times on television.

  • Peace Matunda Orphanage and Children’s Centre The Peace Matunda school started in September 2005. After a lot of work and many generous donations, now has 3 classrooms, 2 teachers and 45 children divided into 3 sections.

  • Ranger Safaris As biggest operator in Tanzania, Ranger Safaris offers a large selection of scheduled small group “seat in vehicle” itineraries, a so called “value option” for singles and couples, which are offered through big catalogue operators in Europe.

  • Al Johari We discovered the Jewel of Stone Town short after its opening in 2008. This 15 room boutique hotel is one of the better options in Stonetown
  • Beyt Al Chai – the Stone town inn Boutique hotel with good french style restaurant. 6 romantic rooms and authentic Stone Town experience. Don’t expect luxury though.
  • Clove Hotel Very well located in the heart of Zanzibar’s Stone Town, this small budget B&B hotel was refurbished in late 2003 by Lisette Aernaudts, the Dutch manager. Clove Hotel offers basic accommodation and a nice roof terrace. Expect mosquitos though.
  • Kisiwa House Constructed in 1840 by a rich Omani merchant and recently renovated into an 11 room luxury boutique hotel.
  • Maru Maru Just behind the Old Fort and the House of Wonders, this 44-room city chic boutique hotel and lounge wants to set a new standard in architectural design with a 5 star guest experience as their motto.
  • Mashariki Palace Hotel This new 18 room boutique design hotel is a privileged residence for travellers choosing refined hospitality in a historical setting.
  • The Swahili House Located in the heart of Stonetown, the building was originally an Indian Merchant House. For 125 years, the building was home to a Sultan family, since 2008 completely renovated and operated by the Moivaro group.
  • Zanzibar Palace Hotel This is probably our first choice hotel in Stone Town if you travel without kids. This old Zanzibar house has been beautifully restored and decorated by a Belgian couple and is currently owned and managed by a Dutch couple.
  • Zanzibar Serena Inn The most comfortable place to stay in Stone Town, part of the SLH. Our preferred place to stay with kids.

Beach Hotels – Zanzibar & Pemba

  • &BEYOND Mnemba Island Lodge, Zanzibar Situated on an exclusive island just 4.5 kilometres (2.8 miles) off the north-eastern tip of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean. Surrounded by an atoll of coral reefs, it boasts some of Africa’s most wonderful dive sites.
  • Chumbe Island – Coral Park, Zanzibar Accomodation on Chumbe Island is special, it’s what Robinson Crusoe could only have dreamt about. With only 7 bungalows, the island never gets crowded, even when fully booked. No surprise that this is a popular choice with our honeymooner guests.
  • Essque Zalu, Zanzibar The combination of a small scale luxury boutique hotel, the child friendly environment with Petit VIP kids club and fantastic food and drinks in 3 distinctive restaurants make this hotel unique on Zanzibar. Less authentic than Matemwe Bungalows & Retreat but probably the best high end option when you travel with young kids.
  • Fumba Beach Lodge, Zanzibar Charming Dutch co-owner Edwin is running this semi-luxurious and peaceful hideaway just 30 minutes southwest of the airport.
  • Fundu Lagoon, Pemba Fashion Designer Ellis Flyte and property developer twins Marcus and Alex Flyte created the best luxury resort on Pemba, our favourite and recommended hideaway with great diving facilities.
  • Kilindi, Kendwa – Zanzibar Exclusive top end 15 pavilion ‘Logically-Eco’ hotel in Zanzibaroque style with fine dining to match.
  • Matemwe – Bungalows & Retreat, Zanzibar is our favourite lodge in Zanzibar with a great balance of authenticity, comfort and style for travellers without young children.
  • Matemwe Beach Guesthouse, Zanzibar Recommendable for those who are looking for a mid-price accommodation or excellent dive base on Zanzibar.
  • Pongwe Beach Hotel, Zanzibar Situated on one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, the Pongwe Beach Hotel is a true paradise retreat, set within a secluded bay on the east coast of Zanzibar. We like the calm area, the modest size of the hotel, with only sixteen rooms.

  • Emayani Beach Lodge, Pangani Next to our favourite The Tides. It is a small lodge built in a coconut grove. The palm-thatched bungalows provide more adventurous accommodation. Kasa Divers Watersports centre run by friendly Belgian Wim van den Bergh.
  • Saadani Safari Lodge Exclusively set in the heart of Saadani National Park, created and owned by Costa Coucoulis, a Greek who grew up in Africa.
  • The Beach Crab Resort, Pangani A great low budget place and good alternative to long established Peponi. Located at the same Ushongo Beach as our favourite The Tides. The resorts specializes in water sports and adventure activities.
  • The Tides Lodge, Pangani Our favourite luxury beach hotel in Pangani, owned by a nice English couple James and Alex Balfour and managed by a US couple with fishing experience. Charming cottages, excellent food. “Sunday Times Travel Magazine Top 6 secret beaches of the world”.

Hotels – Dar Es Salaam

  • Hyatt Regency Dar Es Salaam – The Kilimanjaro Kilimanjaro Hotel Kempinski – soon Hyatt Regency Dar Es Salaam – is our absolute favourite in Dar, close to the fishmarket and facing the harbour. Splendid Asian restaurant. Excellent breakfast and dinner buffets.
  • Moevenpick Royal Palm, Dar Es Salaam One of our few favourites in Dar. Excellent Italian restaurant. Nice rooms, swimmingpool, breakfast and lunchbuffet

Hotels & Private Houses – Nairobi area

  • Fairview Hotel Described as the Country Hotel in Town, this hotel promises more than it offers. Prices have increased in the past years without improving the service, making it for some a very disappointing experience. It however remains a peacefull and pleasant place.
  • House of Waine, Karen This well hidden secret in Karen used to be a private house in the 1970’s and it was acquired by its present owners, a local family, who refurbished it during 2 years resulting in the unique 11 bedroom boutique property. Still conveniently located.
  • Laragai House The private home of George and Lucilla Stephenson, available for rent when they are not in residence. Laragai is a house of spectacular beauty and can sleep twelve guests in extreme comfort.
  • Macushla House, Langata Comfortable, private place to stay when arriving/departing through Nairoibi. Only 6 rooms, excellent restaurant and bar, swimmingpool.
  • Ngong House, Karen Ngong House is a private, serene and luxurious home stay situated in Karen / Langata area of Nairobi. The lodge is only a few minutes away from what used to be Karen Blixen’s coffee farm. it is close to Nairobi National Park, 40 minutes from Nairoibi.
  • Palacina – The Residence & The Suites, Nairobi Possibly the first genuine boutique hotel in Kenya. Stylish suites. The Moonflower is a 50 seat a la carte restaurant featuring a live Jazz band. Our favourite place in Nairobi
  • Upperhill Country Lodge Next door and owned by Fairview, this hotel offers affordable comfort for business travellers. Not at all a tourist place but a good option for clean accommodation with modern comfort including wireless internet.
