New Boutique Hotels in Zanzibar

The Saxon Boutique Hotel & Spa in South Africa is again voted the Africa’s Leading Boutique Hotel in 2007 and with 6 consecutive titles as best Boutique Hotel in the world at the World Travel Awards, it is still setting the standards.

Boutique Hotels are also getting opened in Tanzania and Zanzibar. The Palms is voted in the category as best diving resort but deserves in fact also the title of Best Boutique Hotel of Zanzibar. Another small upmarket lodge which is in particular recommended, because of the friendly Belgian dive instructors Jan and Leen, is Mnemba Island, while Fundu Lagoon is setting the standard on Pemba island.

In a lower price category, we recently tested some new small hotels in Stonetown. Our Belgian colleagues Marion and Sebastiaan opened Zanzibar Palace Hotel. The small scale, intimate atmosphere and luxury interior make it nowedays our preferred accommodation in Stonetown; cleaner, with more comfort and a much better breakfast than the Beyt Al Chai Stonetown Inn or 236 Hurumzi (the rebranded Emerson & Green, the old Stonetown reference).

Great as a beach holiday extension after a safari and/or Mount Meru or Kilimanjaro climb with Onsea House boutique accommodation as a base in Arusha!

East Africa Art Biennale 2007: the biggest Art Exhbition in Central and Eastern Africa, until November 22, 2007

Onsea House was invited to attend the official opening of the East Africa Art Biennale which takes place in Dar Es Salaam. After the opening of the exhibition in the National Museum on Friday November 2, paintings and other artwork will be also exhibited until November 22 in Alliance Française, the Russian – Tanzanian Cultural Centre, Mövenpick Hotel, Kempinski Hotel and La Petite Galerie (Oysterbay).

We took this fantastic opportunity not only to extend the Onsea House African Art collection but also to make a city trip to Dar Es Salaam and test and approve the Kempinski Kilimanjaro Hotel and its Oriental Restaurant and the renewed Mövenpick Royal Palm Executive Rooms and L’Oliveto, the new Italian restaurant. Recommendable!

Yves Goscinny is the Executive Director and Curator of the third East Africa Art Biennale EASTAFAB 2007. As self-taught artist from Belgium who has been living in Tanzania since 1997, Goscinny has organised and written the catalogues of a number of exhibtions (Art in Tanzania, Tingatinga,…) to promote art from East Africa in general and Tanzania specifically.

Wildlife photographer Per-Gunnar Ostby uses Onsea House Arusha as base for his safari in Tanzania

As a second and third grader, Per-Gunnar Ostby was colouring in maps of the world at the school library. He was fascinated with the exotic names, the romantic locations and the seemingly empty spaces on the maps. Now, 30 years later, Per-Gunnar Ostby had the great fortune to spent time exploring quiet some of those places with his camera. Not without success. His swimming lion is now featuring the summer 2007 edition of BBC Wildlife Magazine. The photographer’s website pgo images shows a sample of absolutely stunning wildlife images.

Per-Gunnar visited Tanzania in september 2007. On his travel blog, you can read about his experiences “staying at a fantastic little boutique hotel in Arusha called Onsea house” but also discover Asilia Lodges properties: Oliver’s Camp in Tarangire, Olakira Camp in Central Serengeti, Suyan Camp in Loliondo, Sayari Camp in Northern Serengeti and Matemwe Bungalows on Zanzibar, while on safari with Green Footprint Adventures.
